Acharacle is a village and the main centre for Moidart and Ardnamurchan situated at the end of Loch Shiel, in Lochaber, in the south-west Highlands of Scotland. Loch Sheil is an 18 mile long freshwater loch carved by a glacier during the last Ice Age, known as ‘the last wilderness’. The historic ruins of Castle Tioram built c.1200, stands north of Shiel Bridge on Dorlin Beach at the mouth of Loch Moidart. During the 14th century the Castle was the stronghold of the MacDonald clan, before being burned in 1715 by the Jacobites. The village has hotels, a post-office and tea-room, village shop, bakery and fish and chip shop. Acharacle is popular with tourists offering many activities in and around the village including fishing and golfing. There are Boat cruises on Loch Shiel sailing around the Loch, giving the opportunity to view the spectacular scenery and wildlife including golden eagles and red deer. There are scenic walks through Acharacle village or more strenuous hikes on nearby Ben Resipol. Close by Kentra Bay and the village of Artoe have beautiful sandy beaches and the Glenfinnan Viaduct used by the Jacobite steam-train from Fort William to Mallaig was also used by the ‘Hogworts Express’ as seen in the Harry Potter films.
