In the patois of the Glaswegian holidaymaker of yore, “Doon the watter for the fair” meant only one thing; a trip to Dunoon on the Cowal Peninsula, Argyll and Bute. A 20 minute ferry ride from Gourock, Dunoon is the archetypical Scottish seaside resort, whose natural beauty and accessibility made it an annual pilgrimage for many a bucket and spade wielding family. Not that it is sandy, its shores are shingle, but the town under the gaze of Castle Hill has a whole host of activities to attract the visitor. And getting there is just one. The Waverley paddle steamer is perhaps most traditional (and in truth, the best) way to visit. The only operational steamer of its kind, The Waverley is dearly loved in Scotland. And while it may be getting on, it’s still sea worthy enough to ferry thousands of passengers each year from various terminals; it can even be boarded on the Clyde from Glasgow’s centre, allowing its guests to relax and take in the scenery whilst shunting out to Dunoon. Those whose sea legs have deserted them can take the 70 mile drive along the A83 from Glasgow, a route fringed by picture postcard vistas. The Cowal Highland Gathering is the largest highland games in Scotland, and is not too be missed. Celebrating the influence of nature on art is the Cowalfest; a ten day walking festival that’s, again, the largest of its kind in Scotland. The gardens of Castle Hill hold the ruins of Dunoon Castle, and upon which ‘Highland Mary’, a statue dedicated to Robert The Bruce proudly stands, surveying the town. The hinterland of Dunoon and Cowal Peninsula make it ideal for a walking holiday, whilst the newly created breakwater at Dunoon harbour is popular with summer anglers looking for a mackerel for tea. Dunoon Grammar’s famous alumni include politicians: John Smith (deceased former Labour leader), George Robertson and Brian Wilson, and the town’s most famous ambassador (as per Churchill), was Harry Lauder, who brought the area to life through song.
