Lochgoilhead is a small village at the northern end of Loch Goil opposite Inveraray in Argyll and Bute, Scotland, located approximately a two hours drive north of Glasgow. The first settlement to the area dates from c1200 when the historic Carrick Castle was built; it was once the hunting lodge of James IV, the ruins are five miles south of the village. Lochgoilhead is situated amongst spectacular scenery created by the lochs and mountains; it is a popular tourist resort with a hotel, a caravan and camping site, leisure centre and holiday village. The local shops overlook the picturesque harbour, and there is a selection of places to eat. Lochgoilhead is well-known for the Ardroy Outdoor Education Centre in the Argyll Forest Park; it is used regularly for school excursions and community groups to learn about the countryside and to enjoy outdoor leisure pursuits ranging from canoeing to abseiling. Attractions include the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park; there are cruises operating to explore Loch Lomond and its wildlife, there are many walks including the Glen Donich Forest Walk; a two mile forest walk with routes leading to the hill paths to continue on to Coilessan Glen and Glen Croe. Lochgoilhead has its own golf course and there are fishing and yachting facilities at nearby Loch Fyne.
