Abertillery is an interesting old coal mining town nestling in the Welsh Valleys in Gwent, south east Wales, and is home to over eleven thousand people. From the quiet, humble beginnings of a small hamlet, the town erupted and the population expanded when the Coal Mines and the Industrial Revolution arrived with a vengeance, workers were enticed from the surrounding areas and interestingly also from Somerset. The Somerset Miners worked alongside Welsh Miners sharing their knowledge of Wall mining, the town prospered with its heavy industry of coal, tin plate, and steel works. A stroll around the town will uncover an interesting mix of architecture, and as it is situated just 16 miles or so from Gwent it's ideally placed. Today's visitors can enjoy the stunning countryside where a network of paths and cycleways are on offer in the Ebbw Fach Valley. There is a vast choice of shops in Church Street and Somerset Street that will test the hardiest of shoppers, and opposite the imposing 19th Century church that's dedicated to St Michael will find the attractive Victorian Shopping Arcade. There are cafes, restaurants to please most tastes and a wide range of pubs and bars offering a warm welcome.
