Bwlch ( which means pass in Welsh) is a small village on the A40 between Brecon and Crickhowell. – locals joke that there are as many pubs as inhabitants but numbers are swelled by the ranks of visitors ( usually keen walkers and cyclists) who (whilst they have trouble pronouncing the place to ask for directions) enjoy it when they find it. The village is situated about 200 metres above sea level, and and has fabulous views of the south-western slopes of the Black Mountains with the Brecon Beacons close by .In fact the Beacons Long Distance Footpath passes through Bwlch. Campers are well catered for with all standards of accomodation close at hand but don’t head into the mountains with just a bivvy bag – many people have misjudged this area only to regret it.. The Star Bunkhouse in Bwlch has a good reputation for cleanliness and value for money - much better to enjoy hospitality here than spend a cold night lost on the Beacons. Pretty Llangorse Lake is nearby, as is the charming town - Crickhowell. Bwlch also has a solitary standing stone - perhaps it acts as a sentinal replacing the guardian function of nearby, ruined, Blaenllynfi Castle.
