Laleston village is two miles from Bridgend. Travelling from the east gives a choice of routes either via M4 junction 35 (possibly stopping at the retail park with its outlet stores) but a prettier route would be the B4265 through the picturesque villages of Wick and St Brides Major - perhaps stopping for a seaside lunch at Porthcawl en route. Laleston itself is famed for its hospitality and hostelries but the local legend still serves as a warning against dishonest greed! It tells of a man who collapsed outside the Mackworth Arms. The landlord gave a stiff brandy to him, thus allowing him to continue. Sadly he was overcome again outside the Bell Inn, Again a landlord came out and administered a brandy. Shortly after this he relapsed as he walked past the Oystercatcher Inn. This landlord came out with a bucket of water and threw it over him. It obviously worked as he was last seen fleeing the village. Today tourists can enjoy the historic grade II* listed Great House originally built in 1586 for Sir Robert Sidney Earl of Leicester now a luxurious hotel and restaurant This area has many charms; why not check it out for yourself?
