Penarth has always enjoyed its reputation as a quiet seaside town a few miles west of Cardiff . Regeneration and investment means Penarth also prides itself on being stylish and chic. A good way to admire its charm is to park on the headland at the top of the cliffs and then amble down to the promenade. Penarth has its shingle beach and refurbished Victorian pier where the ice-cream kiosk offers some of the best flavours in Wales. The town itself has a small selection of interesting shops and restaurants. For a day out to please all the family, the town and seaside can be combined with a visit inland to Cosmeston Country Park . As well as a reconstructed medieval village ( where costumed re-eneactments are often staged ) the lakes themselves are beautiful. Visiting ornithologists will enjoy the longer walk dotted with observation hides, the less energetic can still enjoy the shorter board walk over reed beds. Some birds are tourist aware so watch out that you’re not swan -mugged for your sandwiches. On summer evenings, families enjoy picnics by the water - but don’t be tempted to swim - these lakes are originally quarries, deep and dangerous.
