Porthcawl (population approx 16,000) is located on the south coast of Glamorgan overlooking the Bristol Channel, close to Bridgend. Easily accessible from the M4, Porthcawl has long been a favourite destination for holidaymakers as it hosts one of the largest caravan and camping parks in Europe at Trecco Bay. A traditional seaside town, Porthcawl has an extensive promenade and good beaches - two are of blue flag standard. Surfers particularly congregate at Rest Bay meaning it can be exhilarating rather than restful here. It is much quieter in winter particularly when hardy souls take part in the annual Xmas Day swim but if you would rather stay out of the water there are plenty of other activities. Porthcawl holds a Jazz festival each April and an Elvis festival in September or you might just want to visit the rather splendid Grand Pavilion, which offers traditional entertainment such as the regular Tea Dances. Northwest of the town in an area of sand dunes known as Kenfig Burrows are the remnants of Kenfig castle. Porthcawl has suffered some decline in popularity in recent years but there are currently plans to develop a marina here, which should boost this area’s prosperity once again.
