Many people know Rhoose only as the home of Cardiff International Airport. Located 12 miles west of Cardiff (M4 junction 33), it is the fastest growing village in the Vale of Glamorgan. Close to the seaside town of Barry, on the Glamorgan Heritage Coast, there are lovely beaches and charming villages to explore. Families may like to stay at the 4 star Fontygary Leisure Park with its spectacular views across the Bristol Channel to the Devon coastline. Others, planning a special occasion, might opt for the opulence of the Egerton Grey Country House Hotel once referred to in The Egon Ronay Guide as the definitive country house hotel in Wales. There are also small rural inns and guesthouses and the more well known chain hotels - convenient for pre-flight stopovers. Do visit Porthkerry Country Park - the scramble down the pebbled beach to the shoreline is well worth it but don’t be tempted to cross to the sands of Barry Island from here unless you are sure of tide times. Some visitors get caught out, each year, trying to get round the “bulls nose”. It looks a short walk but the sheer cliffs that tower above are not easily scalable.
