Abergele is an old market town in North Wales lying just inland from the coastal town of Pensarn. Probably best known for the Castle that overlooks the town it is not as old as people think and it’s not a true castle. Built in 1819 by a wealthy local individual this mock castle stands in a very much dilapidated state today although there are again plans to try and restore it. The town can trace its beginnings back to around the 8th Century but it wasn’t until the 14th century that Abergele held its first cattle market. Moving further forward through time the Industrial Revolution added to the prosperity of the area because of the availability of local raw materials. Lead and limestone were found in the area and som of the local landowners found themselves becoming quite wealthy. It was in the early 1800’s that Abergele began to develop as a tourist resort, ideally situated with easy access to the seaside for bathing and the countryside around offering bracing walks with the benefit of clean sea air. The increase in visitors meant that by the 19th century many of these people were now living in the area and with the coming of the railways in 1885 between Manchester and North Wales this further increased the number of tourists visiting.
