The village of Chirk lies nestling alongside the River Ceiriog and adjacent to the Llangollen Canal but it is dominated by Chirk Castle which overlooks the town. Chirk Castle is today owned by the National Trust which is the only remaining Edward I castle that is still lived in today. Built in 1310 this was to defend the Marcher Borders today though it is better known for its parks and gardens, during the summer a variety of events are held here which is always popular with residents and tourists alike. In 2005 the BBC used Chirk Castle for the filming of the drama Casanova. The village is steeped in history, the local hotel was built during the reign of James I and was formerly a coaching house, St Mary’s Church which is believed to have originally been built in the 12th century that was remodelled in the 16th and 17th centuries. Today Chirk no longer relies on coal production – that industry having long gone- but instead has the Cadburys and Kronospan factories who selected the location for its excellent communication links. The real reason for visiting Chirk though is not that it has a superb golf course, a canal marina or its castle but the astounding scenery that greets the visitor at every turn as they walk the valley.
