Colwyn Bay is a relatively “new town” located on the North Wales coast between Rhyl and Llandudno with a promenade that extends from Old Colwyn to Rhos on Sea. The town itself was developed in the late 1800’s when the railways made travel easier from Liverpool, Birkenhead and Manchester. This was during the Industrial Revolution and at the time these cities were world renowned for their heavy industries which in turn meant that the very air was heavily polluted in these areas. Colwyn Bay and the North Wales coast were literally a breath of fresh air for holidaymakers who by taking the train could find themselves enjoying the bracing sea air and taking pleasure in walks along the promenade. Today visitors to Colwyn Bay can still enjoy this Victorian town and the facilities it has to offer including the Welsh Mountain Zoo which is to be found above the town. Whilst there is a mainline railway to Colwyn Bay today the A55 Expressway would seem the most popular route to here and you can still get to the Promenade to appreciate its most famous feature the Victorian Pier – originally built in 1899 and despite its chequered history is still open today.
