Criccieth is a small attractive holiday resort situated on Tremadog Bay in North Wales and is unusual in its location. As well as views across Tremadog Bay it also has views across Cardigan Bay and set high on a rocky outcrop are the ruins of a medieval castle – Criccieth Castle one of the few Welsh castles built by a native Welsh Prince in the 13th century. Rising behind the town are the Cambrian Mountains and this geography means that Criccieth enjoys a climate quite different from that of the mountains of Snowdonia. Criccieth is probably better known as “The Pearl of Wales on the Shores of Snowdonia” Historically there have been regular markets held in the town, but the development of the town was slow. A fishing fleet was based in the East Bay and there was some shipping activity but it was not until the 19th century with the growth of Porthmadog as an exporting port and many of the small boats were owned and captained by men from the Criccieth area. The most important change though was to occur with the coming of the railways around 1867 and the town easily took to welcoming tourists from all over the Midlands and North West as it does today. The seafront still appears very much as it did in Victorian times, the houses to the west of the castle initially at Marine Crescent with further development at Marine Terrace. The east side of the promenade benefits from particularly shallow waters making this an ideal location for families to enjoy the sea and sand – away from the hotels and guest houses in the west. Whilst being ideal for a quiet relaxing holiday by the sea, Criccieth is also a good location for touring the Llyn Peninsula, Snowdonia and the Cambrian Coast. Criccieth cannot be mentioned without reference to its golf course whose most famous member and past club president was David Lloyd George the Liberal Prime Minister during the First World War.
