Ewloe is a small town in the County of Flint on the outskirts of Chester with easy access to the North Wales coast making it popular with its residents. Ewloe was the scene of an important battle. Henry II had sent his troops from Saltney Marshes to a battle with Owain Gwynedd, Prince of North Wales. The English troops were ambushed here in Ewloe and according to records of the time many of the assailants were mercilessly slaughtered and the few that did escape managed to report back to the main army the terror they had encountered. Historically Ewloe was a busy place, earthenware, fire bricks and tiles were all manufactured in the area whilst clay for brick manufacture was brought in from nearby Buckley and all of his produce was then exported via the railway network which was close to Ewloe. Today though there is little evidence of this and Ewloe is altogether a more peaceful place, it does have a derelict castle but not of the grand scale that other Welsh towns can boast – in fact Ewloe Castle is hidden amongst trees at the south end of Wepre Park.
