Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch (“St Mary's church in the hollow of the white hazel near a rapid whirlpool and the church of St Tysilio of the red cave”) is not a name that trips easily off the tongue. Fortunately it’s easier to find than say! Situated on Anglesey, one mile west of the Menai Bridge, off the A5, this is where the Britannia Bridge crosses to the mainland. Not only does Llanfair PG have the longest place name in Wales, it is the longest railway station name in Britain. Originally called Llanfair Pwllgwyngyll, the village was renamed in the 19th Century by a local man, to entice early tourists, making use of the then expanding railway networks – a ploy that certainly works now. After a twenty year closure, the station site reopened in 1994.You can admire the miniature steam trains, visit the replica Victorian ticket office and the craft shops and visitor centre. You could also have lunch in the Sidings Restaurant. Whilst visiting Llanfair PG, take the opportunity to visit the Marquess of Anglesey column. Although there are 115 steps to climb, the views towards Snowdonia are spectacular. The column is also a popular challenge for brave/foolhardy abseilers so “Watch out below!”
