Prestatyn is often referred to as the gateway to the North Wales coastline, a town with a history that dates back to prehistoric times, in Anglo Saxon times it was known as Prestetone which means a settlement where two or more priests reside. Some thirty miles away is Chester and there is evidence in Prestatyn that the Romans were also billeted here, a Roman Bath House was excavated in the mid 1980’s and is still visible today, tucked away in a residential area. After the Romans left it was the turn of the Normans however there is very little evidence of their occupation today. It was however the railways that brought tourists to the area, the opening of the Chester to Holyhead rail line ensured that Prestatyn was to become a popular destination. Those first tourists in the late 18th century from the mill towns of Liverpool and Manchester had heard that the air and sunshine would cure all manner of ills, they journeyed to North Wales in their droves to enjoy the experience. Prestatyn proved particularly attractive, miles of golden sands and dunes, a pleasant stroll into the town centre leading up from the beach and for the really fit there was the steep climb to the hill overlooking the town that provides excellent panoramic views across the River Dee and the River Mersey towards Liverpool or further up the coast to Blackpool whilst closer the Little Orme out near Llandudno is clearly visible. Prestatyn has plenty to offer both the tourist and resident, its rail link with the national network ensures ease of commuting and access by road is relatively easy. From seaside to hillside Prestatyn provides a wide variety of leisure activities.
