Though Rhuddlan is only a small town – its population roughly 4,000 nowadays – it has a big place in Welsh history. Situated at the end of the Vale of Clwyd, with the North Wales coast before it, Rhuddlan in ancient times occupied a strategic geographic position that unhappily for the locals saw it regularly fought over – including by the future King Harold – and occasionally plundered and burnt. This was the seat of regional overlord Llywelyn, the last Welsh Prince of Wales, and the place where Edward I imposed the Statute of Rhuddlan in 1284, once he had conquered the country and established his network of castles to secure it, one of the most impressive examples still to be seen in the town. Rhuddlan today makes a great base for touring the area – once its own sites have been explored of course: Rhyl on the coast is now almost contiguous with Rhuddlan; Prestatyn and Abergele are short drives respectively east and west; and the historic centre of Denbigh lies slightly further south, reached via very pretty countryside. Though sadly Beeching removed its rail link in the 1960s (nearby Rhyl escaped that fate, however), the A55 trunk road from Chester to Holyhead makes getting to Rhuddlan easy.
