Cardigan (In welsh Aberteifi) is an ancient cultural and commercial centre. With a population of approx 4200, this is a bustling town famous for its markets, for the beautiful countryside that surrounds it and for the extensive range of local crafts. (People here are specialists in everything from silk painting through pottery to hand knitted clothing and traditional welsh tapestry). Cardigan also boasts a wide range of local activities. Set on the Teifi estuary it is no surprise that water hosts the main attractions. Take a boat trip in Cardigan Bay to dolphins watch, explore the estuary and follow the Teifi river trail. If you are lucky enough to be there in August, feast at the river food festival or watch the locals skilfully compete in the annual coracle races. The C12 castle is undergoing extensive restoration and, as befits a place that hosted the first competitive Eisteddfod back in the 1100’s, music and drama play a large part in community life – visit Theatr Mwlden for a performance. Further afield, Pentre Ifan burial chamber is a wonderful example of its type and just seven miles away are the spectacular Cenarth Falls perfect for woodland walks or gentle pottering about.
