Kidwelly in Carmarthenshire is a seaside town located between Burry Port and Carmarthen. Set in beautiful surroundings, Kidwelly attracts both nature lovers and speed freaks. Three miles away is Pembrey Country Park with spectacular viws and abundance of wildlife. The Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust is also close at hand at Penclacwydd and adjacent to the country park is The Welsh Motor Sports Centre for Formula Three Autocross and Go Karting enthusiasts. A place of great Welsh historical significance, Kidwelly boasts one of the finest castles in Wales ( Built 1106 ) and it was here that Gwenllian - daughter of Llwewellyn , wife of Gryffith ap Rhys ap Tewdwr – took up arms against the forces of King Henry 1. The site of the battle was at Maes Gwenllian ( Gwenllian’s field ) where the vanquished princess and her son were both put to death. It is said that her severed head never left the battlefield - so ghosthunters beware. There is a Gwenllian society here but you could pay homage to her by staying at The Gwenllian Hotel built in the C19 as a fine residence for the owner of Kidwelly tinplate works and now a comfortable and stylish hotel.
