Lampeter (Llanbedr Pont Steffan), in Ceredigion - population approx 2000 - is the smallest university town in Wales and the United Kingdom.. Lampeter University is famous for its Celtic studies including Welsh language and Cultural Studies and, whilst rural, does not feel remote - from the south it’s the M4 to Carmarthen, then the A485 to Lampeter, from the north head for Aberystwyth then take the A487 to Lampeter via Aberaeron - down a particularly pretty run of coastline. It was from Lampeter, in 1968, that the paramilitary, nationalist organisation the Free Wales Army first marched. Today, whilst retaining enormous cultural pride, Lampeter is far more peaceful . During the summer, the famous Food Festival is held, as is the Rhys Thomas James Eisteddfod, and the Carnival. There are numerous eclectic places to stay - eg Rhyd-y-groes combining equestrian facilities with the services of an Aromatherapist ( seems very sensible after a day in the saddle !) Lampeter is also the first town in Wales exploring how to prepare for a carbon constrained, energy lean world.via its transition town initiative – “a tool for designing a positive timetabled way down from the oil peak”A green model for us all perhaps ?
