New Quay (Cae Newydd) on the Cambrian coast of west Wales lies 20 miles south of Aberystwyth and 18 miles north of Cardigan. This small town (population 1115) is a popular tourist destination in summer. Its sheltered harbour, overlooking Cardigan Bay with contrasting views towards majestic Snowdonia, is surrounded by narrow, terraced streets with interesting shops and galleries. The safe beaches are a delight for sunbathers and beachcombers alike. Wildlife enthusiasts can spot bottlenose dolphins, grey seals and the sometimes elusive Red kites. Why not take a boat trip along this stretch of marine heritage coast? Dylan Thomas lived here for nine months in 1944 and many believe that the “cliff perched town at the far end of Wales” spoken of in Under Milk Wood is indeed New Quay. Heading inland takes you towards the Plynlimon Mountains where traces of the old workings of the lead and silver mines can still be found. There is something to delight the senses at any time of year but it is particularly enjoyable to support the small music festival held at the beginning of August; the proceeds go to supporting local charities. Glastonbury it isn’t but do you really want it to be?
