Events in Gatehouse Of Fleet | 10 Places to Stay
Gatehouse-of-Fleet is a tranquil village in Dumfries and Galloway in Scotland, situated 6 miles north-west of Kirkcudbright at the mouth of the Water-of-Fleet.
The village owes it existence to the military road built by James VI, a ‘gait-house’ or inn was built c1610 to serve travellers using the route and by 1700 it was established as a cattle market. In 1760 the village was founded as an estate village which then developed into a thriving industrial centre during the 19th century.
Gatehouse-of-Fleet is a popular tourist resort with shops, hotels, inns and places to eat. Historically interesting features include The Clock Tower dating from 1871, the ruins of Anworth Church complete with covenanters graves and the Murray Arms Hotel built in 1766 thought to be where Robert Burns penned ‘A Scots Wha Hae’ in 1793.
The Mill on the Fleet was built in1785, once used for cotton spinning and weaving mill it is now an award winning visitor centre with café and picnic grounds and The Cream o’ Galloway is an organic farm producing famous ice-cream, offering ‘The Ice cream experience’ with tours, a play area and nature trials.
Activities include golf, mountain-biking and fishing and sailing at the old harbour.
Other attractions nearby include the well-preserved ruins of Cardoness Castle, a 15th century fortified tower-house.
