Gretna Green is a small village in Dumfries and Galloway in Scotland situated at the head of the Solway Firth adjacent to the village of Gretna and one mile north-west from the Border with England. Gretna Green is famous for being the ‘marriage capital of the UK’, where under Scottish Law couples are able to marry at age16 without parental consent. Gretna Green is a popular tourist destination, with 4000 marriages taking place each year at the Blacksmith’s Shop, in the village and at the registry office in neighbouring Gretna. The village has two hotels, a serviced lodge, B&B’s, guest houses, self-catering cottages and a caravan park There are restaurants, a bakery with factory shop, a garden centre, a Tourist Information Centre and a children’s play-park Attractions include the ‘World Famous Old Blacksmith’s Shop’ (or Old Smiddy) which opened in 1754 with the village Blacksmith or ‘anvil priest’ performing the marriage ceremonies finishing with striking the anvil. There are three wedding rooms complete with anvils and a museum with exhibitions and audio/visual displays. There is a Native Breeds park, an Arts and Craft Centre and a Sculpture Garden. Nearby is a retail outlet with excellent shopping facilities. Historical features nearby include the 7ft Clochmabenstane dating from the 2nd or 3rd millennium BC, thought to have been part of a standing-stone circle.
