Bembridge is one of the quieter and more "exclusive" centres, a favourite with celebrities seeking tranquillity and fabulous scenery. Located on the most eastern point of the island, it boasts a big, natural harbour bustling with the comings and goings of fishing vessels, yachts and pleasure boats. Dinghy sailing is a popular activity here. Visitors are charmed by the village's pretty, unhurried high street and its colourfully painted houses, shops, restaurants and bars. For outdoor types, there are several award-winning pebble and sand beaches, and exhilarating clifftop walks along the coast. To the south is Bembridge and Culver Down which affords spectacular views in all directions - to Sandown Bay, or across the Solent to Portsmouth and its unmistakeable landmark, the Spinnaker Tower. Bembridge has its own small airport and a lifeboat station, but perhaps its most famous sight is the island's only surviving windmill. Built of stone in the 1700s and situated in the High Street, the defunct, four-floor windmill is now a National Trust property open to the public. Anyone with a head for heights is welcome to climb ladders to the top. The less daring may be happier on solid ground, exploring the windmill's original wooden machinery.
