Newport - the island's capital town - and its surrounding villages offer a huge variety of entertainment, activities, shopping and sightseeing. In the town itself, familiar high-street supermarkets and chain stores exist alongside unique speciality shops and market stalls, a multiplex cinema and an arts centre adjoining the River Medina. Newport has been a legendary name in music circles since its jazz festival began in the 1950s, and it now also stages two major annual rock events: the Isle Of Wight festival, revived in 2002 (after 32 years) in Seaclose Park; and Bestival, staged in the Robin Hill Countryside Adventure Park at nearby Downend. Robin Hill's pathways through 88 acres of countryside, woods and ponds make for a marvellous family day out, from the thrills and spills of the kiddies' rides to the chance to see endangered red squirrels in the wild. Nature-lovers are also guaranteed to enjoy the marshland reserve at Newtown, whose 17th Century town hall is still standing, Coleman's Animal Farm in Newport and the Amazon World Zoo Park near Arreton. No visit to Newport would be complete without a trip to historic Carisbrook Castle where Charles I was imprisoned before being hanged in London in 1649.
