The village of Niton sits at the southern tip of the flattened diamond that is the Isle of Wight, on St Catherine’s Point where its solid old lighthouse built in 1838 stands not far from one of the settlement’s inns. Niton comprises two parts; Upper Niton set a little back from the sea, clustered around the road that leads eastwards to Ventnor, and Undercliff, formerly a fishing hamlet. The popularity of the Isle of Wight in the Victorian era – Victoria of course had Osborne House at the northern tip of the island as a holiday residence – and the reputation of the area as a health resort means that some fine old villas and mansions can be seen in Niton. As so often, however, the most impressive building here is the church, in this case a Norman building dedicated to St John the Baptist. Although Niton only has a resident population under 1200 it has excellent local amenities, including bookshop, hardware store and general store, with a doctor’s surgery and pharmacy to boot, those facilities partly supported by the summer boost to the population with visitors. Similarly the several pubs and coffee shop benefit from that trade. The village has two claims-to-fame in the history of communications, Marconi having broadcast from a farmhouse there to his receiver on the Lizard Point at the tip of the Cornish Peninsula, and with a memorial to one of the originators of our public library system, Edward Edwards, in the churchyard (happily for that association the village also has its own volunteer-run library).
