Ryde has all the ingredients for a classic family seaside holiday, beginning with a whole six miles of sandy beaches. Swimming conditions are perfect, and the tide goes out so far that the shore lends itself ideally to games. Recently, Ryde has been staging beach soccer events. The town, on the north-east coast, offers splendid views of the Solent. Among its own most photographed sights are the marina, the tidal harbour and the old pier, half a mile long. Other popular spots are Appley Tower - a Victorian watchtower built to resemble a castle - and Puckpool Park where young and old play tennis, crazy golf or bowls beside a 19th Century battery. For kids, there's fun galore with a boating lake (also home to dozens of swans), a tenpin bowling alley, an ice rink and Peter Pan's Playground, a funfair with rides including dodgems, teacups and carousels. Adult visitors enjoy the wide esplanade, the shopping streets and a varied nightlife in clubs and restaurants. The town is host to a number of regular events including the Ryde Regatta, the Annual Steam Show, the Ryde Arts Festival, held during carnival season, and Ryde's own carnival, reputedly the island's most spectacular.
