The south-east coastal town of Sandown gives its name to one of the island's most beautiful bays, framed to the north by the magnificent white chalk cliffs of Culver and Yaverland while the southern curve sweeps round past Shanklin. The bay's extensive sandy beaches are loved by sun worshippers, swimmers and watersports fanatics alike. Nearby Yaverland hosts an annual White Air Extreme Sports Festival featuring surfing, windsurfing, kite-surfing, mountain boarding, skate, BMX and paragliding, with daily introductory lessons for kids. Sandown caters for all tastes and ages. Leisurely pursuits - fishing, golfing and putting - are popular with many visitors. Others prefer to work out, or simply enjoy being pampered, at The Heights leisure centre, offering everything from swimming, squash and a gym to saunas, Jacuzzis and beauty treatments. But all this good work can quickly be undone in the town's many pubs, clubs and restaurants! Children thrill to the pier with its flashing rides and amusements, tenpin bowling, crazy golf and the adventure play area of Magic Island. Equally, they enjoy family trips to the lakeside Dinosaur Isle, complete with moving exhibits, the local airport and its museum, and the tigers and big cats at the Isle Of Wight Zoo.
