Ventnor is a handsome southern town with grand houses and hotels built on the side of St Boniface Down, overlooking the Channel. Like Shanklin and Sandown, Ventnor carries the air of its Victorian past through its architecture. Uniquely, though, it also exudes a Mediterranean atmosphere created by a sunny, sheltered location in which sub-tropical plants freely flourish. Many exotic varieties from around the world are displayed at the 22-acre Ventnor Botanic Garden. The town has many attractions, from intriguing shops, tearooms and eateries serving locally caught crab and lobster to the seafront where families enjoy the sand and shingle beach, the harbour and the views across Ventnor Bay. Braver visitors may like to learn how to handle, train and care for birds of prey at the White Falconry. Elsewhere, there's a heritage museum and the chance to watch craftsmen creating handblown glass at Isle Of Wight Studio Glass in neighbouring St Lawrence. It's only a short westerly drive - through the spectacular Undercliff - to Blackgang Chine, a theme and amusement park set in beautiful Victorian cliffside gardens. There are fine walking opportunities too. The picturesque and secluded Steephill Cove, an age-old fishing village and port, is an especially rewarding destination.
