Latest reviews | Events in West Cowes | 10 Places to Stay

The name of Cowes is synonymous with sailing, and it never disappoints the thousands who come to absorb this past and present tradition. The town, at the island's north peak, is divided into facing parts by the estuary of the river Medina. West Cowes is the bigger and busier destination: it's at the centre of the action during the world-famous Cowes Week, held annually in August, and the many other yachting and powerboat events happening over the season. This is also the home, in Cowes Castle, of the Royal Yacht Squadron, one of the world's most elite sailing clubs. West Cowes boasts a fabulous marina and a striking town centre recalling an era when Cowes Week was faithfully attended by royals and high-society glitterati. Local attractions such as the Cowes Maritime Museum and the Sir Max Aitken Museum detail a great, seafaring history, while the Military Museum illuminates the island's wartime experience. Alternatively, families enjoy mini-golf, tennis and leisurely strolls in the leafy Northwood Park. For walkers, the coastal road to Gurnard is recommended. And a trip to East Cowes by chain ferry takes visitors to Norris Castle and Osborne House, Queen Victoria's principal residence after Prince Albert died.
