Events in Ballasalla | 10 Places to Stay
The name Ballasalla means "place of the willow trees" - a poetic description of a village that's as scenic as it is historic. Situated close to Castletown and Ronaldsway Airport in the south of Man, Ballasalla grew up around the ruins of Rushen Abbey, home to Cistercian monks for some 400 years from the 1100s. The remains of the abbey, and its grounds, have in recent years been transformed into a centre for visitors and archaeologists with a museum, shop and gardens. The nearby Monk's Bridge, which once carried the brothers' pack-horses over the Silverburn river, is one of Britain's finest remaining medieval bridges. A lovely nostalgia surrounds the 1800s' steam trains, stopping for passengers at Ballasalla as they chug through miles of green countryside on a narrow-gauge steam line, longer than any in the UK. The island's 17 glens offer delightful sightseeing, and Silverdale Glen has something for everyone, from a picturesque pathway past woodland streams, waterfalls, ponds and a wishing well to a children's play area with a boating lake and the world's oldest water-powered merry go round. Still in the great outdoors, anglers enjoy the Santon river, while walkers thrill to exhilarating coastal views around Scarlett Point.
