Coupar Angus is a traditional Scottish town located in east Perth and Kinross on the fringes of the county of Angus. It lies in the Valley of Strathmore on the south bank of the River Isla. A stream here joins the river and divides the town in two; this was formerly the boundary between Perthshire and Angus. Coupar Angus is steeped in history with many interesting buildings including, The Cistercian Abbey built in 1164, founded by King Malcolm. The gateway is all that remains of the abbey, which was burned down in 1559 during the Reformation. The old masonry was used to build the church in 1681; the church was later rebuilt in 1857. The town’s steeple dates from 1726. The Tollbooth Tower 1702, served as the court and prison and to the east of the town ditches and ramparts are found, the remains of a Roman camp. The town was revitalized as a market town in the 19th century due to the arrival of the railway. Situated in rich agricultural land Coupar Angus is well known for local agricultural production including growing fruit and seed potato. There are shops and local amenities and the Larghan Victory Park provides recreational facilities.
