Situated to the east of Dundee, Monifieth is a small residential town and Burgh in Angus on the east coast of Scotland. Monifieth was given Burgh status in 1895 as the population grew due to the successful Jute industry. Stones discovered at St. Rules Church dated back to the 9th century, indicating Monifieth is an ancient settlement. The Parish Church 1812, is said to occupy the site of a chapel which was the burial place of St. Andrew, the graveyard contains sculptured antique tombstones. There is also a War Memorial in Art Deco style built in 1922. Monifieth is a popular tourist resort and there are camping and caravan sites on the links behind the beach. One of the main attractions is Monifieth Sands a stretch of beach on the north shore of the Firth of Tay, from Barnhill in the west to the Barry Sands in the east. The beach is equipped with a Children’s Play area, a skate park and further east there is a firing range. The town has a supermarket, several shops and local amenities, an Inn and B&B’s. Monifieth links golf course is used as a qualifier for the British Open when the Open is at nearby Carnoustie Links.
