Dating back to before 1235 the settlement of Russum took its name from “the place where rushes grow”. Today you would find it incredibly difficult to find many rushes here in Rusholme, one of the more famous suburbs of Manchester. This part of Manchester with its rows of terraced houses has found popularity those curry connoisseurs who have renamed this area “The Curry Mile” home to the largest number of South Asian restaurants in England. There is however more to Rusholme than this, one of Manchester’s largest public parks is to be found here at Platt Fields and this is where you would find Platt Hall, an elegant Georgian house that is today home to the Gallery of English Costume, one of the finest collections of costumes and fashions in the country. Rusholme was also home to the British Film Industry and the Mancunian Film Company producing around 60 films during its lifetime. The studio was eventually sold to the BBC and it became their first regional studios outside of London from where Tops of the Pops and Grandstand were both broadcast.
