Lying to the east of Loch Lomond is the small rural town of Drymen. It's exactly the sort of town where, upon entry, the stresses of city life are cleansed from you, and the air seems unnaturally fresh. Indeed, it's the sort of town where it's not entirely unusual to see a local walking through its centre with a barn owl perched on the shoulder. Yet, Drymen is just 20 miles from Glasgow; placed in the bosom of Loch Lomond and Tros-sachs National Park, it is equally an ideal base or overnight stopover when discovering this unspoiled area of Scotland. Walkers undertaking the arduous West Highland Way welcome the modest sight of Drymen; with hotels, hostels, camping and the last free cashpoint for quite a distance, the town is a customary and valuable stop. Aside from those on the aforementioned trek from Milngavie to Fort William, this Stirling-shire village has enough attractions close to hand; Loch Lomond is a stone throw away, and the green fringes of the Queen Elizabeth Forest Park are on its doorstep. So whether you are looking for some fishing in The Endrick or a Trossachs loch, want to rest your feet after walking through idyllic countryside, or just want to get some oxygen in the lungs; Drymen's quiet charm whispers a come hither.
