Grangemouth is a town and Scotland’s largest container port situated in the Falkirk region of Scotland sitting at the mouth of the Grange Burn at the junction with the Firth of Forth and the River Carron. The town was known as Sealock until 1752 when it was bought by Sir Laurence Dundas, he planned and developed the industrial town and by 1777 it was an important link terminal between the River Forth and the Clyde Canal to increase the trade with Glasgow. The Caledonian Railway Company took over the docks and canal in 1867 and commissioned the first deep-water oil jetty. Although Grangemouth is dominated with docks, an oil refinery and chemical works, it is still a popular tourist destination and an ideal base for visiting attractions in Falkirk, Glasgow, Livingston and Bo’ness. The town has old fashioned streets and lanes with buildings dating back to the 1800’s including the impressive town hall, in the town centre is the La Port shopping centre with a variety of shops and cafes, there is holiday accommodation, inns, pubs and place to eat out. Attractions include the Zetland Park with its war memorial at the main entrance and the Grangemouth Museum with exhibits of the towns heritage, canal origins and the story of the ‘Charlotte Dundas’ the worlds first canal steamship built in 1802. Boat-trips are offered to explore the Forth, Clyde and Union Canal
