Strathblane is a rustic, country village which should be familiar to residents of Glasgow’s north-west suburbs, and anyone who has driven along the A81 to Aberfoyle. Just a short trip away from Milngavie, Strathblane has a quite wonderful rural setting in the shadow of the Campsie Fells, fringed with pastoral land and moorland irrigated by the River Endrick and its tributaries. Strathblane really is in the cradle of Stirlingshire’s countryside; Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park is a stone’s throw away, and the West Highland Way’s arduous, yet thoroughly rewarding, route passes through the nearby village of Drymen. Walking is a popular pastime for visitors to the town, with plenty of unspoiled moorland to discover. There are a number of wildlife reserves boasting unspoiled moorlands home to several species of bird and insect. Ballagan Glen, by Ballagan House, in the Campsie Fells, is a magnificent retreat which comes alive in the summer with birdlife. Sparrow hawks, buzzards, tits and herons all thrive among a habitat rich with ferns and liverwort. Loch Ardinning, between Strathblane and Milngavie is another lovely spot, smuggled away by the roadside, hidden by trees and fringed with sedges and bullrush – deer are a common sight there, so too are herons, and both cuckoos and whinchats visit in the summer. Watching the sunset cast a warm glow over the Campsie Fells brings summer evenings to a breathtaking close. A tour around the Glengoyne Distillery casts another warm glow, one that’s felt on the cheeks rather than the hills. Strathblane is a charmed little village.
