Benwell is an interesting village in Tyne and Wear, Newcastle, reaching far back into the history books. During the Roman occupation it held strategic importance being so close to Hadrian's Wall, today sees visitors eager to explore the many delights on offer. For all things Roman there are the ruins of Benwell Roman Temple which was dedicated to Antenociticus, or why not take a look at Arbeia Roman Fort which housed a Garrison. For splendid architecture Newcastle Cathedral has it all, from a mesmerising spire, to Medieval glass, or possibly the white washed home of Stephenson will uncover a glimpse into 18th Century living, step outside and wander along the riverside path and the old Wylam Colliery Wagon Way. Museum lovers will enjoy the exhibits on offer at at The North East Museum, and The Discovery Museum, or for a poignant and thought provoking experience The Royal Hussars has much to share. If shopping is a must then the fabulous Metro Centre with over three hundred shops maybe one temptation too many, and for smaller visitors there's the wonder of Beamish Open Air Museum which covers three hundred acres of County Durham countryside, where shops, houses and buildings are crammed with treasures waiting to be seen.
