Near Gateshead and approximatey 5 miles from Newcastle in north east England, lies the town of Blaydon, or Blaydon-on-Tyne. The town is the origin of the well known traditional song ‘Blaydon Races’, written by George ‘Geordie’ Ridley in 1862 depicting the chaotic journey from Newcastle to Blaydon and its annual races. Regarded by many as the unofficial anthem of Tyneside, it has also been adopted by supporters of Newcastle United Football Club. A traditional mining town, Blaydon barely existed in 1760 but in the latter part of the century a smelting works was set up and from then on, with its strategic location on the Tyne and on the Gateshead to Hexham road, its industrial growth was assured. Since the closure of the mines, Blaydon has developed a diverse economy, which includes manufacturing and engineering, with its close proximity to Newcastle and Gateshead making it a popular suburb for commuters. The town hosts a 5.7 miles athletic road race from Newcastle to Blaydon called the Blaydon Race every year on June 9th, to commemorate the song with the words of the song as the basis for the race albeit now sung in a slightly more modern language but still with a heavy Geordie dialect.
