Situated approximately six miles east of Morpeth, nine miles north of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, is the town of Cramlington, close to Bedlington, Plessey Woods and the river Blyth, in Northumberland in north east England. The name suggests it was settled either by Danes or Anglo-Saxons as the word ‘ton’ means town and Little Cram is the homestead where the Scandinavians of that name are thought to have farmed. The chapel was established in 1270 but the first record of the town is from 1135 when the land was granted to Nicholas de Grenville and the first entry in the register of chaplains starting in 1163. Since the twelfth century, the town maintained its rural, agricultural and historic character right up until the early nineteenth century when several mineshafts were constructed, the first being sunk in 1824 and coal mining changed the entire area. The large-scale mining brought lots of people to the area with Cramlington Colliery a major employer. As the 1900’s progressed however, like so many other great northern coalfields, there was a decline in the production of coal, affecting the town and forcing regeneration. In 1964 Cramlington was proclaimed a ‘New Town’ and became the site of several large housing developments. Since then it has effectively become a suburb of the city of Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
