Killingworth in North Tyneside is two places at once: the 1960s new town, originally called Killingworth Township; and the village of Old Killingworth to its south. The contrast between the two is striking. Though the years have seen much of its bold and brutalist architecture toned down (with peaked roofs added to many impractical flat-roofed houses for example) or knocked down in the case of some once confidently avant-garde blocks, some of the better designs have stood the test of time. The lake that the authorities created where previously pit heaps had stood is another example of dynamic 1960s planning. A place in the hearts of survivors of the 70s should be reserved for Killingworth, which though not named in the series provided many location for classic sitcom Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads? Old Killingworth likewise for railway enthusiasts – it was for Killingworth Colliery that George Stephenson built his first working locomotive, Blucher. Dial Cottage where he constructed the machine still stands, now used as a museum. With Newcastle racecourse no great distance, and its airport only a short drive away, the town makes a convenient base for those on business or pleasure in the area, easily accessed via the A1; Newcastle centre is likewise within easy reach, though Killingworth has its own amenities including shops and several pubs.
