A tourist resort in north east England, Roker is next to the River Wear and Monkwearmouth to the south, the North Sea to the east and the town of Seaburn, of which it is a suburb, to the northwest. Most well known for being home to Sunderland Football Club until 1997. Roker was formed in 1587 when the Abbs family was granted land on the north side of the Wear in return for providing six soldiers to defend the mouth of the river. In 1840, Roker Terrace was built upon the clifftops overlooking the river mouth along with Monkwearmouth bath, then Roker Park was created and subsequently the pier and promenades were built. With the beach area on the North Sea coastline, Roker became a popular tourist resort and became part of Sunderland in 1928. Roker Park is a landscaped Victorian park, with miniature railway, Victorian bandstand, bowling greens and tennis courts. It is a different park to that which was the former home of the Sunderland football club which was given the same name. That site is now a small housing estate known locally as Roker Park Village with its street names all bearing reference to the football club.
