Whitley Bay, in North Tyneside, is a town situated on the coast of the North Sea with beaches stretching from St Mary’s Island to Cullercoats. Once a popular holiday destination, the name was changed to avoid confusion with Whitby further down the coast in East Yorkshire. Referred to in various ancient documents and maps as Witelei, an Anglo-Saxon term meaning ‘White Meadow’, Whitley was first mentioned around 1100AD when King Henry I conferred it along with other possessions, to the Priory of Tynemouth. Whitley was mentioned in the Charters of Henry II, Richard I and John when confirming their priors and possessions. It was connected to the Crusades when yearly rents were used for six years to defray the costs of an expedition to the Holy Land. Held by the Crown after the suppression of the monasteries, Edward VI granted it to Dudley, Earl of Warwick, later made Duke of Northumberland, in 1551.It remained in the Percy family until 1632, subsequently passing to the 11th Earl of Northumberland then, by inheritance, to Elizabeth Seymour, who married Sir Hugh Smithson who then was created Duke of Northumberland. Descendants have retained it since and the present Duke of Northumberland is the Lord of the manor and principal landowner. During the early twentieth century, decline of local coal mining and dependent industries allowed Whitley Bay to grow rapidly, first as a fashionable, Victorian watering-hole then, in the 1950’s and 1960’s, as a popular seaside holiday resort for workers from the north east and Scotland. During the1980’s however, after council boundary changes, the abolition of the Borough and an apparent loss of civic pride, the town declined in appearance and suffered from a lack of development. It is currently undergoing a massive multi-million pound regeneration of the sea front, at the heart of which is the re-development of the Spanish City site, built in the 1920’s and since demolished.
