This small town in Shropshire can trace its roots back to Saxon times, this despite the fact that there is a Roman road close by however there is no evidence that the town was occupied by the Romans. Shifnal has never been known as an industrial location, indeed its growth and prosperity was based on the town being a staging post, in the 18th century, when stagecoaches and mailcoaches travelled between London, Shrewsbury and Holyhead. This however was shortlived with the coming of the railways in the mid 19th century and it soon once again became a small market town. The church can trace its history back to Saxon times, the present church being built on the site of the original Saxon church in the 12th century and with additions undertaken over the following three centuries the church stands proud just off the town centre. Today the town of Shifnal offers its residents a small shopping centre with a range of traditional shops whilst for those who prefer to travel a further afield the railway station is located in the centre of the town. This is the key to Shifnal it offers the small town convenience yet you are able to travel easily by road and rail to the Midlands or further if required. For those that live and visit though there is nearby Boscobel House, a splendid fully restored black and white property complete with oak panelling and priest holes, Weston Park is also conveniently situated nearby together with the RAF Museum at Cosford.
