Chenulveslei, as it was known in the Doomsday Book, has a great deal to offer visitors and residents, today it is known as Knowsley – located in the North West of England close to Liverpool just off the M57 and the East Lancashire Road the town of Knowsley is readily accessible for commuters. Knowsley Hall has been the ancestral home of the Earls of Derby since 1835 and is set in around 2,500 acres of private parkland. The Safari Park was opened in 1971 and continues to attract thousands of visitors every year whilst the Stanley House Stud has bred over 20 classic winners in the last century. St Mary’s Church, was built between 1841 and 1844 and paid for by the Earl of Derby and close by is the village green which in past times was used at times of celebration and it is said that this was the location of the maypole as used in the village. The area is known as the Knowsley Triangle and around it stand the former Village School and on the green itself is the War Memorial erected to commemorate those local residents who gave their life during the Great War. Knowsley Village retained some of its 19th century buildings, there are estate cottages and alms houses as well as the old post office – remnants of a time gone by providing a snapshot of times gone by.
