If Birkenhead was the “engine room” of the Wirral then Prenton was where the wealthy resided. To be found close to the top of the Wirral Peninsula on a hill overlooking Birkenhead and The River Mersey this is where the people with money resided. In Anglo Saxon times much of the area was scrub and woodland until the Middle Ages. The development of the Wirral for residential use, and in particular Prenton, is closely linked to the improved transport connections with Liverpool. Most important in the development of this part of the Wirral was the inauguration of the Mersey Tunnel which gave access to the important Port of Liverpool. Not only could the wealthy of BVirkenhead live in the relative idyll of Prenton but also those wealthy people of Liverpool found a home here. In any neighbourhood where the wealthy gather there is always a demand for leisure activities and Prenton was no exception. The game of golf was, in the late 19th century, gaining popularity and by 1905 Prenton had its own golf club. Prenton today thrives as a location that offers its residents the convenience of Birkenhead and Liverpool together with the tree lined avenues where large houses and modern apartments nestle side by side.
