It is believed that Prescot is the derivative of an Anglo Saxon name “Prescota – cot” which translates to “Priests Cottage”. The site of the present St Mary’s Church dates back to 1100 and is the only Grade 1 Listed building in the borough of Knowsley. By medieval times Prescot had developed into a thriving market town and was head of most of the parish of South West Lancashire. Many people associate Prescot with coal mining and this has been an important part of the growth of the town, but Prescot also grew in importance as a time piece manufacturing centre from the mid 18th Century. Watchmaking continued in the town until the early 20th century when Switzerland and America were producing watches of an equal quality - but much cheaper. The 20th century brought an unexpected and exclusive dependence on cable manufacturing with the establishment of the BICC works to the area. When BICC closed the loss of employment was devastating – unemployment reached record levels and today Prescot is still making every effort to overcome this problem. The creation of a new shopping centre at the Cables Retail Park and work is well underway on Prescot’s new Business Park, the first phase of which will see 40,000 sq ft of office space and 40,000 sq ft of workshop and light industrial units being built.
