Toxteth is a suburb of Liverpool in the North West of England with a history dating back to Roman Times, Roman coins have been found in an urn in Toxteth Park. By the 13th century though Toxteth was important enough to be declared a Royal Park by King John. Today there are two parks within Toxteth ,Sefton Park and Princes Park, Sefton Park offering tree lined walkways with a cafe in the centre and is home to Sefton Park Cricket Club whilst Princes Park boasts a serpentine lake and circular drive, whilst Princes Park was once in private ownership today both parks are owned by the local authority. It is said that one of the oldest churches in Liverpool is to be found here in Toxteth, St James’ Church was built in 1774 and is still standing today as an example of the architecture of the period and one of the oldest remaining buildings in Britain to use cast iron pillars. Part of the great port of Liverpool, Toxteth was at one time central to the growth of the City however with the decline of the docks and shipping Toxteth seemed to be affected more than elsewhere and in more recent times Toxteth gained an unenviable reputation. Today though the residents of Toxteth have successfully placed that episode behind them and have worked tirelessly to present the new face of Toxteth. Much of the Georgian street scene architecture remains and is of such high quality that it rivals its counterparts in other historic cities, but not content with these past glories Toxteth is again becoming a vibrant multi-cultural location with new housing and amenities for its residents.
