Wavertree in Liverpool has a long history with local archaeological finds indicating that the area was first settled by pre-historic man in the Victorai Park area and in the Domesday Book Wavertree is known as Wauretreu. Its location saw the creation of the original village and it became an important agricultural centre with wheat, oats and potatoes being grown in the area. In the 1840’s Wavertree experienced rapid growth, it attracted the rich and wealthy from Liverpool where they settled and built their mansions and villas. In the early 20th century Wavertree was selected as the location for a new Garden Suburb, a movement started in the late 1800’s, these were to be self contained communities surrounded by the greenbelt and Wavertree was one of around 20 that were planned in the early 1900’s and today parts of this are still evident within the Conservation Area. Today Wavertree is firmly establishing itself as the place to live and work, there is the Wavertree Technology Park close to Liverpool City centre and with excellent transport links the Park is also home to Barclaycard employing some 800 people. As further evidence of the progress that Wavertree is making in terms of attracting companies to the area and therefore its financial security into the future are recent plans to incorporate Wavertree Technology Park into the larger Liverpool Innovation Park creating yet more jobs in the area. Whilst many may consider Wavertree to be simply a good place to live there is no denying that it is once again becoming an important economic centre.
