In the borough or Redcar and Cleveland, in the parish of Skelton and Brotton, lies the small village of Brotton about two and a half miles south east of Saltburn-by-the-sea, fifteen miles east of Middlesbrough in north east England. Listed in the Domesday Book, known in medieval times as Broctune, the village name means literally ‘town on the brow of a hill’. The hill being Warsett Hill, situated on top of the large Huntcliffe, the site of one of many Roman signal stations built to defend against Anglo-Saxon attack. William the Conqueror granted a number of manors to Robert de Brus, Lord of Skelton, of which Brotton was one but it has become somewhat isolated in recent years due to the building of a by-pass in 1998 between the villages of Carlin How and Skelton-in Cleveland. Ironstone was the cause of an increase in population as its discovery brought numerous changes to the village. Former miners homes can mostly be found in the ‘Brickyard’ and ‘Park’ areas of the village. The largest of the mines, Lumpsey Mine, opened during the 1880’s and closed in 1954. During the First World War, it had rail mounted artillery to defend against Zeppelin attack.
